Contemporary Jewellery

The design of jewellery has often followed the technological progress of humans over the centuries. Wendy McLean designs contemporary jewellery that is wonderfully inspirational. She combines silver and gold wire coils with gemstone beads in a completely unusual way that evokes thoughts and memories of our distant past. She also creates woven silver and gold designs using age-old techniques to make necklaces and bracelets. Could her inspiration stem from the Ancients?

Wendy has evolved her wire coiling techniques to explore the use of double and multiple coiled wire to make some of her designs such as her mandala-like pendants. This is a fairly new development, and should be followed by enthusiasts on her blog.

The complete design range includes necklaces, pendants, earrings, cuff-links and bracelets.

Unique Wire-Coiling Design

The eternal metal wire coil: one turn faithfully following another, until it is terminated by a precious gem, pearl, or just continues in an infinite circle. This type of contemporary jewellery design enables the creation of metal-rich pieces, which can be bold, yet easy to wear as the jewellery is surprisingly light in mass. Some wire coil designs enable light to permeate the design, and as such brighten the coloured precious gemstone, and so enhance it’s beauty.

Natural Gemstones

The gemstones Wendy uses includes precious freshwater and sea pearls, diamonds, faceted tourmalines with their myriad of colours, multi-coloured sapphires, rubies, aquamarine, tsavorite garnets, agates, peridot, garnets, lapis lazuli, black spinel, topaz and precious quartz.

These stones feature in many of the earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets.

The colours of natural stones are combined in the most complimentary way and can be colour coordinated with any outfit.
